Shortspine Thorny Rockfish
Thornyhead rockfish are a type of rockfish that are known for the spiny ridge across their cheek. They are found from the Bering Sea to Baja California, Mexico. They can live in depths up to 1,500 meters. Shortspine thornyhead rockfish being one of the more unique rockfish have a large head and an elongate, tapering body. They can grow up to 80 cm (31 in) in length. They have 15 to 17 dorsal spines and 8 to 9 soft rays in their dorsal fin.
The fifth dorsal spine is the longest. Underwater, they are red or orange-red with white patches on their gill covers, backs, sides, and tips of the dorsal fin. U.S. wild-caught shortspine thornyhead is a smart seafood choice because it is sustainably managed and responsibly harvested under U.S. regulations.
